Rios Montt’s attorneys and prosecutors presented their closing arguments on Thursday in the genocide trial against him, as the historic trial that began in March enters its final phase. Rios Montt is facing charges of genocide and crimes against humanity for allegedly conceiving a counterinsurgency plan during his 1982-83 rule that killed at least 1,771 members of the Ixil indigenous group in one of the bloodiest phases of Guatemala’s civil war.
