Miles asistieron a la gran inauguración en la Plaza de San Marcos del Carnaval de Venecia, que este año se celebra bajo seguridad intensificada luego de las agresiones sexuales durante las celebraciones de la víspera de Año Nuevo en Colonia y la actual amenaza terrorista en Europa, reseña AP.

Los asistentes disfrazados por primera vez tuvieron que sacarse las máscaras para ser inspeccionados por las fuerzas de seguridad.
Las autoridades han aumentado la vigilancia en toda la ciudad, así como el número de agentes que patrullan en uniforme y encubiertos, pero se negaron a la propuesta de prohibir que los asistentes usen máscaras. Por tradición, quienes van al carnaval pasean por la ciudad con disfraces muy elaborados y máscaras pintadas a mano.
El jefe de la policía de Venecia, Angelo Sanna, le dijo a The Associated Press que se abordó el debate sobre las máscaras “con balance y atención, porque el Carnaval son las máscaras”. Agregó que había puntos de revisión en donde se revisaría la identidad de quienes trajeran máscaras.
El carnaval inició el sábado y continuará hasta el 9 de febrero.
