Dos décadas después de la muerte de la princesa Diana de Gales, sus hijos Guillermo y Harry se han sincerado tras años de silencio como parte de un esfuerzo para mantener vivo su legado.

A poco del 20º aniversario de su muerte, el 31 de agosto, los hermanos hablan públicamente de su madre y del dolor que les causó su muerte en un accidente de coche en París, así como de las causas que defendió.





Guillermo, segundo en la línea de sucesión al trono de su abuela Isabel II, tenía 15 años cuando murió Diana y Enrique tenía 12.

“Veinte años después, Enrique y yo sentimos que es un momento apropiado para sincerarnos un poco más sobre nuestra madre”, dijo Guillermo.

“No volveremos a hablar nunca más sobre ella de un modo tan abierto y público”, aclaró.

Los dos aparecieron en un programa de televisión titulado “Diana, nuestra madre: su vida y legado”, emitido por la cadena ITV en julio.

“Es la primera vez que hablamos (públicamente) de ella como madre. Probablemente era demasiado doloroso hasta ahora. Sigue siendo doloroso”, explicó Enrique, que reveló recientemente que hace poco necesitó ayuda psicológica para lidiar con el duelo.

– Celebrando la vida de Diana –

No es el primer aniversario que se conmemora públicamente: en 2007, los príncipes presidieron un concierto benéfico en el estadio de Wembley y Enrique habló en una ceremonia de recuerdo.

Pero es la primera vez que los hijos del príncipe Carlos hablan sin tapujos sobre la desaparición de su madre.

“Enrique y yo sentimos intensamente que queremos celebrar su vida”, dijo Guillermo en aquel programa.

En la emisión recordaron a una mujer divertida, el cambio en sus vidas tras la separación de sus padres y el dolor de la muerte.

Para Patrick Jephson, que fue secretario privado de Diana, la decisión de los dos hermanos esconde un punto de rebeldía.

“Durante gran parte de las últimas dos décadas, (Diana) fue un nombre que no podía mencionarse en círculos reales”, dijo a la AFP.

“Así que, con un punto desafiante y determinado, sus hijos han salido a decir ‘no, hay muchas cosas buenas que recordar, celebremos su vida’.”

– Una estatua en Kensington –

Los hermanos encargaron una estatua de su madre que se instalará en los jardines del palacio de Kensington, la que fue su casa.

Además, asistieron a un servicio religioso privado el 1 de julio en el lugar en que está enterrada, junto a la mansión de su familia, los Spencer, en Northampton, en el centro de Inglaterra, en el día que hubiera cumplido 56 años.

En su vida pública, Guillermo, de 35 años, y Harry, 32, han tomado el relevo de las causas queridas a su madre.

La visita de Diana a un campo de minas de Angola ayudó al movimiento que desembocó en su prohibición en 1997, y sus encuentros con enfermos de sida ayudaron a romper el tabú que les rodeaba.

La campaña de Harry para el desminado o para facilitar las pruebas de sida, o las de su hermano en ayuda de los niños huérfanos o de los sin techo, entroncan con el trabajo caritativo de su madre, como lo hace su esfuerzo conjunto para promover la atención psicológica.

Harry explicó que ambos se preguntan a menudo qué haría ahora su madre.

“No hay un solo día en que Guillermo y yo no deseemos que estuviera viva. Nos preguntamos qué clase de madre sería ahora, qué papel público tendría”, aseguró.

Jephson explicó que el principal legado de Diana son sus propios hijos.

“Se puede apreciar en ellos muchas de sus cualidades, principalmente la capacidad de combinar realeza con el don de gentes”, estimó.
