El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, y la primera dama, Melania Trump, encabezaron hoy un momento de silencio en los jardines del ala sur de la Casa Blanca en recuerdo de las víctimas de los atentados terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001.
En el decimosexto aniversario de los ataques, el primero de Trump en la Casa Blanca, el mandatario y su esposa participaron en el momento de silencio acompañados por parte del personal de la residencia presidencial.
El momento de silencio se realizó, como en años anteriores, a las 08.46 hora local (12.46 GMT) para recordar el instante en el que un primer avión se estrelló contra una de las Torres Gemelas del World Trade Center de Nueva York en la mañana del 11 de septiembre de 2001.
Trump y la primera dama se desplazarán luego al Pentágono para asistir allí a una ceremonia en honor a las más de 3.000 víctimas mortales que provocaron los atentados y a sus familias.
Además de los dos aviones que impactaron contra las Torres Gemelas, una tercera aeronave se estrelló a las afueras de Washington contra una de las fachadas del Pentágono, sede de la Defensa estadounidense, lo que provocó la muerte a 125 personas dentro del edificio y a las 64 que iban a bordo.
También aquel 11 de septiembre una cuarta aeronave cayó en Shanksville, en Pensilvania, después de que los pasajeros forcejearan con los terroristas para intentar retomar el control del avión.
Hoy estarán en Shanksville el vicepresidente de EE.UU., Mike Pence, y su esposa para homenajear a los héroes de ese Vuelo 93 y a sus familias. EFE
